Julian Hails 1994 - Football was in Julian's blood,
his father William was a professional footballer, an
outside right playing for Lincoln, Luton, Northampton +
Peterborough in the 50's + early 60's. He scored 41
League goals in only 165 appearances, a goal total his
son will have a considerable trouble beating.
Julian was studying for a Maths Degree + playing for
non-league Hemel Hempstead when Fulham offered him a
trial. They liked what they saw + offered a part-time
contract while he passed his degree.
Julian played 3 years for Fulham in his father's right
wing position scoring 12 goals + making such a
contribution to the team that he was voted Player of the
Season by the Fulham fans. However a groin stain kept him
out of the team + a change of Manager saw him out of
favour so he asked for + was granted a free transfer.
Southend's Manager Peter Taylor signed him on 2 December
1994 + next day he appeared as substitute in a 2-0 home
win.
He really made his mark in his next match, his first full
appearance, where he scored a spectacular goal against
Middlesbrough at Ayresome Park, in a 1-2 for Southend
over the top club. The other goal of that game scored by
Phil Gridelet was a real cracker too!
Ronnie Whelan gave Julian a place, but with Paul Byrne on
the right he was often pushed over to the left wing, not
his favourite position. Injuries stopped him playing
regularly, but he made 40 appearances, played for 3,012
minutes + got two yellow cards in the 1996-97 season.
It took Alvin Martin's decision to play Julian at right
back to bring out the his best + as soon as he gained a
regular place at the beginning of September 1997 Julian
outplayed ever other Southend player. He made 49
appearances, played for 4,053 minutes, received 5 yellow
cards + was voted star player 6 times in the 1997-98
season.
There was no real competition for Player of the Season
which he must have won by a mile.
Married in June 1998 + upon his return from honeymoon
made SUFC's supporters very happy by resigning for 3
years, taking him thro' to May 2001.
Having spoken to Julian briefly on a number of occasions
it must also be said that he has a very personable
character + is quite happy to have a chat.
