Andy Thomson
1994 - 1998
Started at Jerviston BC from
where he joined Queen of the South. Leading scorer in Scottish
Division 2 scoring 108 goals in 201 appearances.
Brought by Peter Taylor to Southend in the 1994 close season
he had a considerable weight on his shoulders as the fans expected
great things. He finished joint leading scorer with 11 goals
in 1994/95. Unfortunately injuries + management changes never
really saw him get an extended run in the first team, so the
potential was never truly fulfilled. He remained a favourite
with the majority of the fans + with the noticeable exception
of Jerone Boere vs. Fulham, seemed to be appreciated by his team
mates.
He very rarely appeared to give less than 100% he seemed to create
chances for others with his unselfish running + close control.
It was no surprise that he decided not to sign a new contract
when his came to an end in May 1998 + was snapped up by Malcolm
Shotton (Oxford's Manager) under the Bosman Ruling in late June.
Shotton described him as "a real goalscorer" + most
SUFC fans would wish him well + hope that an injury free period
would see his true potential once again realised (except, of
course, if Oxford played the Blues).
Andy was always ready to have a chat with the fans + come over
as a thoroughly likable bloke.
